Farm Bill Passes With Veto Override

As is common with omnibus bills, it's extremely unwieldy and contains both positive and negative provisions.  It's so unwieldy, in fact, that the first time it passed it did so in a version missing 34 pages.  Out of 673 total pages, you'd think no one would miss them, but they were the parts dealing with foreign aid for the global food crisis (caused, in part, by growing demand for inefficient corn-based ethanol).  The vote had to be taken again the next day.

Among the progressive pieces of the bill are increasing food stamp funding, conservation, and animal welfare, as well as a cut in the corn-based ethanol tax credit.  Fresh fruits and vegetables will be subsidized for the first time, and a program was added to provide some of these to schoolchildren.

I was worried that for the only time in eight years I agreed with the Moron In Chief about something, namely that the bill gave huge subsidies to farmers who were already reaping high profits (he couldn't bring himself to take a shot at agribusiness rather than alleged greedy individuals, though).  But since according to the AP nutrition and food assistance make up 66% of the bill, it was just an anti-public-assistance stance masquerading as populist rhetoric again, so screw him.
