Enough With The "Sorority" Nonsense
I love how certain code words can sneak into the discourse and become misogynistic even as you watch. When members of the women's national team make poor decisions about how to solve a problem with their teammates, they are accused of behaving as if the national team "were a sorority." I must have seen this more than a hundred times over the past few weeks. Although I'm not a proponent of the Greek system by any means, I recognize the use of an all-female organization as a stand-in for petty, catty, and over-emotional when I see it. That says nothing about what sororities are, it just signifies that they're being used as a way to bash women. The men's team wasn't called a fraternity when recriminations were flying there. That's because the only negative use of 'frat' is going to involve men drinking and partying, which are not exactly frowned upon in the sports world. The worst part is that it's not going away, as it's now also being used as an insult for the way in which U.S. Soccer has placed Mia Hamm on the coaching search committee as player rep. God forbid there should be player input, which might have prevented the last two fiascos.
