Groups of investors passionate about the teams and their home cities, many of them women, are changing the face of pro ownership. The latest successful buy keeps the Dream, a playoff team in only their second year, in Atlanta. This sure beats linkage with NBA teams and their owners, sometimes people of dubious commitment to the women's side of the sport.
The city is in crisis, so let's take its team away. More than that, let's take a successful team, which has made the playoffs seven consecutive years and won three championships. The weirdest part for me is that the Shock have always been the most urban of WNBA teams, and I'm not using that as a racial euphemism. Rather, they play a tough, gritty style that's very suited to Detroit. I can't imagine how it will play in farm country, nor that the current set of players will be happy there. This is a sad day for the league, which has shown that the historicity and importance of franchises is no barrier to change.
Phoenix and the Storm were unable to complete theirs, while Detroit took advantage of Atlanta's inexperience to rally back, and the Fever kept the season sheet clean against the Mystics by coming from behind to win. The Merc probably just ran out of time. Seattle played quite well
for stretches, even without the MVP and their top outside shooter.
Batkovic impressed me, too. If a concussed Nolan is kept off the floor for game two of the Dream/Shock series, the Dream are in good position to win at home. The cliche is that basketball is a game of runs, and it seems that the first round is going to be about who can withstand them and who has the discipline not just to draw close but to go over the top.
With nine days of competition left in the regular season, there are just two and a half games separating the 2nd through 5th teams in the East, and three games separating the 3rd through 5th teams in the West. Since the schedule is loaded toward in-conference match-ups, each team can directly help or hurt its own cause. Phoenix plays at Seattle on the 10th as a possible conference final preview.
