Hearts in the right place, brains perhaps not exactly functional. The Hampton Inn is now carrying paper cups from the sustainable forest initiative...but each is still individually wrapped in plastic. It also has begun using compostable ware at its breakfasts. But the one I recently stayed in didn't have a compost trash bag to put it in. It's still better to throw away bio utensils and plates than those made out of oil, but given that you need an industrial composter to cause them to biodegrade fast and fully, it's not the ideal solution to just launch them into the landfill.
While I was eating my Apple Jacks, I also reflected on what is surely one of the strangest ad campaigns ever. You remember it from your childhood. Some clueless adult banging on about how 'if it's called apple jacks, it should taste like apples' while the kids roll their eyes. Why sell a product by emphasizing how it doesn't live up to its name? Because kids definitely hate fruit and you're making sure they know it really just tastes like sugar? Baffling.
